What happened?
Apparently, there is such a thing as a bad DMB show. We decided to see this show when we learned they won't be touring next year. We left early, which is something I never thought I would do at a DMB show.
The set list? How many of your favorites do you see? Compare this to the May 21st show in Cuyahoga Falls less than a month ago, which included Satellite, Don't Drink the Water, Tripping Billies, and Warehouse, along with So Damn Lucky, Drive In Drive Out, and So Much to Say, and which included a four-song encore. No Ants. No Best of What's Around. No Warehouse, Two Step, Crush, Satellite, Don't Drink the Water, Tripping Billies, Jimi Thing, Dancing Nancies, What Would You Say, or Stay. WTF? And just one song in the encore. Right now, name your top ten DMB songs of all time. Now check the set list below.
There was very little interaction with the crowd (Dave actually seemed kinda pissed at us), there were long periods of silence between songs (periods measured in minutes, not seconds), and nearly every song ended as a free-form jazz exploration (like Spinal Tap's "Jazz Odyssey"). We left during Typical Situation. It was a 20-minute walk to our car, and we were out of the parking lot before they finished the song.
Is there such a thing as a bad DMB show? Not my favorite DMB show. In fact, if I had to pick a "worst" show, this would be it. I have to say, the next time DMB tickets are available, memories of this show will make me hesitate.
